When I first started welding my boss told me my first goal should be the strength of the weld and not the prettiness, no one knows how pretty it was before it was ground down.
These mods will really help with any flash and sand shifting a lot. Good stuff bud. You will have to post the next pour bud.
Your welding will improve heaps if you can switch over to using gas. Gassless mig is about the worst kind of welding there is in my opinion.
You will regret putting those latches on the side of the box due to not being able to stand the box on it side.

I was talking about setting it on the side while you remove your pattern. It may not want to sit up without falling over. I will send you some pictures of what I have came up with. I may work for you also. Thanks
