Roth Oil Tank Installation MA

The East Boston house was the site of the house renovation project featured in the winter segment of the “This Old House” series that took place on PBS in December 2007. CommTank is there to remove and replace 2 oil tanks.

CommTank was recommended for the job by Trethewey Brothers, Inc. of Boston, some of the most recognizable plumbers in the country. They are the plumbing and heating contractors who frequently appear on the Public Broadcasting System’s “This Old House” program. This project involved removing two steel oil tanks and replacing them with a Roth double-wall tank. Roth tanks are unique because they have a polyethylene inner tank and a galvanized steel outer tank. The polyethylene inner tank will not rust like a traditional tank. Because of the safety and reliability of these materials Roth provides a 30-year warranty on this oil tank.

Before the Roth tank is installed the original tanks are emptied of oil and the fuel is temporarily stored in CommTank’s combination (box/tanker) truck. The oil tank pipes are cut away and the tanks are placed on their ends to move the sludge to one end of the tank. The oil tank is then cut in half so that it can fit through bulkhead and entry doors. The sludge that collects in the tank bottom is pumped out before the oil tank can be removed from the basement. Sludge is considered hazardous waste and must be disposed of at a hazardous waste recycling center. The oil tanks that were removed are brought back to our building to be crushed and sent out for recycling as well. A permit must be acquired at the local fire department for both the removal and installation of oil tanks. Once the old oil tanks have been removed, the new Roth tanks are installed and the oil that was pumped out of the old tanks is put back.

  1. Don't call it a Roth oil tank installation and then not show any part of the installation. This was all about old tank removal, and nothing to do with an installation.

  2. There was no installation of a Roth tank as the title states , it was a explanation on a tank removal procedure. You should title it properly it's misleading!!!

  3. Just did one at my summer place in ME but it was a PITA. Had to transfer the oil into the new tank, pull the old tank out, transfer the oil back into the into the old tank, move the new tank into place and then transfer the oil back into the new tank (getting tired just thinking about it). Fortunately had less than a 1/4 tank when I did this. Stood the old tank on end and cut it into 3 sections with a sawzall. Took the last section (with the sludge in it) into the back yard and set it on fire to burn it off and then all 3 sections to the dump.
