The Backstep technique for tig welding is a way to limit distortion on thin sheet metal.
Backstepping is when the direction of travel is in one direction but the overall progression is in the opposite direction.
All that said, its a great technique for thin sheet metal for limiting distortion.

Great video as always! Any tips on welding sheet metal that you can’t get a backer on? Like s car body panel.
Wow ok thanks. 2 questions, does the see-through cup help you to look at your arc through the cup? Reason I ask is I have smaller cup and have to tilt gun at work to be able to see arc and it looks like you are nearly verticle. Second question is how thick is your aluminum chill bar?

I am a novice TIG welder. I am experimenting with 24 guage, butt and lap joint. Much frustration, using square wave 200 @ 25-35 amps. any tips or is my MIG .023 wire the way to go? Thanks
TIG'n 1/8" Aluminum "angle iron" — at mitre joints — is a hard way for me to learn TIG. This should help! (cold-bars? yeah!)
