Making A Wood Burning BBQ Grill From Scrap Metal – Part 1

Been wanting to do this for a long time.
The grill area is 19″ x 13″ and the tray is 4″ deep. Mainly want to use wood as the fuel, but it can also run on charcoal.
The stainless steel rods were left over from a job I did several years ago and are 1/2″ diameter. Not sure what grade of stainless, but no problem welding it to the mild steel ends.
The 1/4″ steel was on it’s way to the garbage bin (amazing what gets thrown away on a commercial job site) when I snagged it, knowing I could do something with it eventually.

I spent the better part of 2 days making the grill and the tray, and that’s something I’d like to get across in these videos – projects like this take a lot longer than they appear to in these videos. This is especially true when using scrap material, although I was fairly lucky with this because what I had was already very suitable.

  1. Hey John, I saw somewhere (I think it might've been Jimbos Garage channel) that you could use PAM spray to prevent the welding splatter from sticking to the work. Have you ever heard about it or tried it?

  2. If you grind the primer off the plate it would cut cleaner. If you are worried about warping the metal you can clamp another 1/4 peace of steel on the other side to exchange the heat.

  3. Lol I like your grinder I can tell it's a older model lol I just started grinding maybe a few months ago at a fab shop I need help making a 14 inch grill not good with dimensions
