How to Repair Outdoor Wood Furniture & Fix Rotten Wood | Woodworking

Outdoor furniture is exposed to the elements and wood furniture will break down over time. Wood rot can set in from moisture unless it’s managed well with proper construction and protected with an outdoor wood finish. See how an old picnic table is taken apart, replacement parts made, and put back together again.

  1. I admire your expertise, and learn from your videos, as I have only just started woodwork as a hobby. Thank you. This repair seemed labour intensive and here in the Uk labour charges are high, how do you make it viable to repair, rather than the customer purchasing new?

  2. Hi there,
First… MANY MOONS AGO in 1979 – 1980 when I was young enough to take some SAILING COURSES… I visited on a small YACHT and it had some mahogany and teak wood… I told the owner: "WOODEN! IT BE NICE!" (Beach Boys)
I am ELATED to see your SHIRTS !!!!

I like learning many things… I have skills and understanding in many fields… I am MOSTLY a commuter specialist…
I was a bit disappointed that you did not keep the ORIGINAL DESIGN…
I understand the rot-causing issue… if I were to solve this problem I would use a SPACER of a sort between the top and the diagonal support… what came to my mind was an ALUMINIUM STRIP (2 in. x 96 in. Aluminum strip, 1/8 in. Thick) that will be placed between the top and the supporters, and would reduce the water exposure of the support beam. it should be used as one long spacer ..

What is your opinion about this?
    Thanks for your sharing

  3. Great video. I need to do something similar…what wood did you use here ? I am looking for something low cost and am only looking for 5 years of life. It will be left out in the open…Bay Area weather
