How to plan a layout for a tile shower with a running bond pattern

One of the most important parts of a tile installation is the layout of the tile. in this video I give a few important tips on how to do a tile layout. This shower consists of a large format porcelain tile installed on a running bond pattern, and includes a recessed niche a linear drain and a lot of plumbing that needs to be all taken into consideration while laying out the tile. A good tile installer will know the size of every cut tile before any thinset is mixed, to accomplish this a tile “Layout” must be done. A row of tile should be placed on the floor to use as a reference to measure what the cuts will be. The spacing between the tiles should be the actual size of the grout line that will be used. Alternately, math can be used to calculate all dimensions. It is important to try to have every cut tile close to a full tile as possible but no less than half a tile. This is not always possible, so compromises must sometimes be made. If a small tile cut needs to be made, it is best to try and have it in the least conspicuous place.

  1. If you weren't using a Schluter trim on the flat wall to end the running bond tiles, can I use bull nose tiles and will they cover the cut edge of every other tile in the running bond edge? Do you think the 1/8" grout line between the bull nose and cut edge will cover the cut edge? I'm not a fan of the Schluter trim pieces as it looks to commercial for my taste. Your videos are great. Keep up the good stuff of educating us. Thanks

  2. Hey Sal! Happy New Year, Bro. You know I’ve been following you on all social media platforms for years. Question, have you ever thought of starting a school or at least a 10 Day Paid Work Shop? I know I would attend!!! You should think about it Bro. Just a thought…

  3. Sal, I noticed that some of your cut outs around the shower mixing valve are Square. Is it important to cut out a round hole around the shower valve in your backer board and in tile when installing? Or does it matter as long as the mixing screws are accessible?

  4. Sal, I have 12×24 honed Carrara porcelain tile for the bathroom floor that I layed out in a 20% running bond pattern. I have the polished version of that same tile for the shower wall. My question is do I need to match running bond patterns or can I go with 50% or 33% running bond on the wall without it clashing with the floor?
