  1. The first time I did this was decades ago. I helped my Dad put a toilet in the basement. We put the cast iron ring in place and then packed it with shredded lead and oakum (which I believe used to be packed between the boards on boats to waterproof the hulls). It put the fear of toilets in me, but this "new" method is much easier.

  2. He should have replaced those those cheap plastic "nuts" on the closet bolt with regular 1/4" nuts and metal washer. . Plastic is garbage and won't stabilize the bolts well enough in the upright position while lowering the toilet!
