I've always found freehand to be quite difficult And it's hard to come out with a really nice product. But if you cut the sign out of thin plywood or something like MDF or even Masonite first. And then use it as a pattern to glide around. You'll find your cuts are much Quicker and smoother and you have much less work to do with the dross on the back. Just a little suggestion. Try it, you'll find it makes the cutting much easier and you can always reuse the template. And you can always refine the template with sandpaper or rasp to Modify it and smooth it out.
