Strange way to control the heat-input… You have settings (U/I) for this on the welding-machine.
Why?
If you use a flap disc, you will get a better finish that is more controled when you go to grind off the welds smooth. Just a suggestion though. As always… Many ways to skin a cat. If you try the flap wheel, I think you'll find it a bit faster too.
Use a guard on the grinder.

When you pulse welded, was that a machine function or manual. It looked like the wire pulled back or burnt off between each pulse.
