This is the first episode of our Metal Working for Beginners series where we show how to incorporate metal into DIY projects without needing expensive specialized tools. This DIY Wood and Steel Bench uses 2” by2” by 1/8” steel angles from home depot to make custom brackets that connect the wood legs to the wood bench top.

This video series will have a little more information and explanation than our typical project videos. Let me know what you think and if you want to see more of these Metal Working for Beginners videos. My plan is to showcase simple projects that rely on one or two metal working techniques and that don’t require welding. I am considering an angle grinder which costs about $40 as a basic and accessible power tool but I want to hear your opinions on what constitutes accessible and affordable.
So, to clarify, after using the countersink bit, you would recommend using the One Wipe Charlie for cleaning your brass hole?
The 2nd idea with the brass is genius and looks really expensive! I like expensive looking things that are actually cheap! 🙂 Ben, thanks so much for starting this metal working series! Really inspiring. This will certainly raise the world wide demand for metal brackets! Did you by any chance buy some stocks beforehand? Admit it! 😉 Keep it up! One of my favorite channels!
Great starter video!! Just what I needed. Also loving onscreen ben!!
6:17a brilliant idea! First come on it :)) Greetings Mrhandwerk;)
love the format and project, the angle grinder is a must-have for any shop using steel
I would like to add as tip: if you can avoid it, don't get steel from your local big box store. Just go straight to the source, your local steel yard. It's almost always cheaper, they sell cutoffs which are discounted usually, and you get to support your local homies in the process. Don't be intimidated by big trucks and the scale of the business, most places will happily hook you up with whatever you need, no matter how small your order is. If your car is too small to transport your material, they can cut it down to any size for a small fee.
i'm a welder and very familiar with metal works and most machines you use but usually works with metal instead of wood but this is interesting.
Awesome stuff as always! Where can I find the dimensions for cutting the angled brackets to the cool geometric shape you have? I checked your website but couldn't find a written article for this project.
