As a hybrid woodworker, storing and protecting my handtools in a way that makes them easily accessible is very important. My Dutch Tool Chest is basically an entire handtool woodshop in a box. In it is every single tool I need to turn a tree into a piece of fine furniture. It is handy to take my entire handtool workshop with me when I teach classes and build in my friends’ shops. This chest’s contents are particularly special to me because every tool in it has a story- I either know the maker personally or have taken part in the actual construction of the tool myself. I think using tools made by people I admire encourages me to build to a higher standard. Further, using beautiful tools inspires me to do beautiful work. I built my first dutch tool chest after reading about the project in a piece written by Christopher Schwarz. You can read what he’s written on the topic on the Lost Art Press blog and he also has a video about building a dutch toolchest available through Lie-Nielsen Toolworks. Building a Dutch Toolchest is a great weekend project utilizing fairly inexpensive materials which will allow you to practice your dovetails (don’t worry, it’s painted!), dado grooves, tongue and groove joints, and breadboard ends. 1. I watched the build video and am very happy to see the tool chest filled and in use! For all the viewer concerned with the cost of high end heirloom tools: There are a number of You-Tube Channels were the makers show how to make the basic tools needed or aquire them at low cost. Pask Makes, Wood by Wright , Paul Sellers and Rex Krueger are just the tip of the iceberg. As you go along, you can later replace individual tools with high end versions as your finances allow or you heart desires.

  2. A focus on high-quality tools from smaller, individual toolmakers and a Dutch tool chest…I can smell a fellow Chris Schwartz fan from miles away!

  3. Awesome! If you want to see photos of real old Dutch tool chests, just image search antiek gereedschapskist or antiek timmermanskist which in English means "antique tool box" and "antique carpenter's box."

  4. That is a very simple, but oh so well thought out design and the tools you've acquired over the years are absolutely stellar. I think I need to make one for my, now small, but growing tool collection. Curious though, you missed one small item in the chest, the small 3 drawer mini chest in the bottom, what's in there?

  5. You have a TOP NOTCH kit there. I was researching a few things like the Auger bit tool holder and a couple other things. Love it. I'm restoring a few tools and learning the beauty of the brace drill with a Stanley 2101-A or something that ratches. It's SO nice. Ya, gonna build something this for my workshop.
