DAIZZ’S TIP:-Saffron crocus bulbs do not store well. Plant them as soon as possible after receiving them.
Saffron plants need well draining soil and lots of sun. If saffron crocus is planted in swampy or poor draining soil, it will rot. Other than needing good soil and sun, saffron crocus are not picky. When you plant your saffron crocus bulbs, place them in the ground at about 3 to 5 inches deep and at least 4-6 inches apart.
After your saffron crocus bulbs are planted, they need very little care. You can fertilize them once a year, though they grow fine without being fertilized as well. Water only when top layer of soil feels dry to touch. Growing saffron crocus is easy and certainly makes the expensive spice much more affordable. Now that you know how to grow saffron plants, you can give this spice a try in your home garden..good luck..:)

  1. This is a very incomplete piece of information about growing saffron which I have been doing in Michigan for over 30 years. Saffron requires a cold climate to survive. It is dormant from late spring and all summer long. I sprouts in the fall of the year and blooms immediately. It then continues to grow throughout the fall and early winter, but is stays green for the entire winter regardless of the severity of the cold. In late winter when the snow melts there lies the still green saffron leaves much like very long grass leaves. As the temp warms in spring the saffron becomes dormant as the heat of summer arrives and then stays dormant all summer long. It sprouts again as the fall temp cools and begins the cycle again. Cold temp is an absolute must for saffron growth and survival. Saffron corms should be purchased in summer and planted outdoors to experience the cold of the fall whether in a pot or not. This is very important. It also should be kept out of doors all winter long.
