Tool Stand with Retractable Casters // Metalworking & Welding DIY

How to make a mobile tool stand for a heavy tool, such as a jointer, bandsaw, etc. The wheels retract so that the tool will not move when you’re trying to use it.

  1. I have that exact jointer and I had installed post swivel casters in the regular unit. Alas, moving onto asphalt from smooth garage concrete cause the sheet metal tabs underneath to give inward and almost caused it to fall backwards (backwards being the heavy side) Luckily I was paying attention and saved it! I thought of just using 1/4” steel plate the whole length and weld upward sloping sides about 2” inches up to “cradle” the jointer. I also wanted to make 2 sliding outriggers to offset the tendency of the unit to be back heavy. Watching your sped up view at the end, most viewers have no idea how compactly heavy this unit is. Now your idea of the dropping casters has increased my creative ideas. I’ll have to take a video and make my first YT post. Thanks again, liked and subbed.
