I started my welding business by doing welding for small machine shops. Its a great way to build a business because when you are just doing welding for machine shops, there is no upfront cost for materials.
I would usually pick up the parts and take them home to my shop where I would weld them and then I would deliver the parts and get paid.
At first it was only a few jobs a month for one small machine shop. Then I starting getting work from a second machine shop…then a third. 3 machine shops kept me plenty busy in my off time… since I already had a full time job.
If I was starting a welding business from scratch, I would visit several small mom and pop machine shops and drop off a sample weld along with my business card.

The bit about the black oxide finish was interesting. I've been using a pipe expander as a heat sink for TIG welding a tubular part and I noticed oil coming out of the pipe expander components when they get hot. I was wondering why but I think this explains it - the oil is coming from the black oxide coating on the parts of the pipe expander.
This might be a silly question.... At 5:16, if your grinding prep is a bit deeper than 1/8”(too much pressure on the grinding wheel maybe), is that something you’d just correct for with filler rod? Or would it scrap the piece?
Me trying to do TIG welding with a 1.5mm plate with 40amp and touching the plate everytime, having to resharpen my point. watching this like damn wish I could make nice TiG welds like that
Best video yet
It was really nice to see how the part was priced for a customer, it was also nice to see how black oxide works
Thanks for taking the time to make high quality videos, especially the close up view of the welds. That along with the excellent narration make these the best welding and metal fab videos on YouTube.
Jodie, please make him a good tool for the coating process.
Judy can you send me something that tells me what tig rods to use on what matal
Thanks for the video, can you explain the black oxidation process clearly? With the names of the scientific article?
