Video script:
1. Mr Sabo, a resident of Mt Airy Philadelphia contacted Dependable Concrete to repoint his damaged stone retaining wall. In this video I will demonstrate how my crew and I restored Mr Sabo’s wall. And at the end of the video I will discuss the mix ratio of the brown toned mortar that was used to repoint this wall.
2. Now, let’s swoop down and take a look at Mr Sabo’s wall.
3. It’s clear that Mr Sabo’s stone retaining wall is in desperate need of repair. There are missing
mortar joints throughout the wall. There’s bulging and missing stones in the center of the wall.
Come and let me show you how I restored this wall for Mr Sabo.
4. This section of Mr Sabo’s wall requires the most attention. As you can see, there are missing stones, the wall is bulging, and there are several decayed and rotten stones that have to be removed and replaced. This area looks unsightly! So Mr Sabo called Dependable Concrete. Stay tuned because we will restore this ugly wall to highlight the beauty of having a stone wall.
5. Up to this point, we have removed the rotten mortar joints from the wall. We are now drilling into the wall to install 3” PVC tubing which will redirect the hydraulic pressure through these 5 new drains.
6. Although we have removed the damaged mortar joints entirely, this will not guarantee that Mr Sabo’s newly pointed wall will be durable enough to withstand the elements unless we prepare the area properly to receive the fresh mortar.
7. It is critical to clean and free any loose material from the area between each layer of stone. Any material which interferes with the contact between the fresh mortar and stone will cause the pointing to fail prematurely. We don’t want Mr Sabo calling us back angrily. Remember, we are Dependable Concrete.
8. When we point the wall we restore the joints to match the original style.
9. For our mix design we use a 1:5 mix ratio; one part Portland cement to five parts brown sand. We use brown sand to achieve an aged, earthy tone instead of the white tone of new mortar.
10. Brown toned mortar makes this job appear as if it was completed many years ago.
11. In the description section of this video I will list all the tools and supplies used to complete this project.
12. This wall has now been restored to reveal the beauty of a natural stone wall. We removed the bulge, plumped and leveled the wall, matched the style of the original pointing, applied an aged look to the new mortar joints and installed a pressure-relief system to protect the wall from hydraulic force.
13. Mr Sabo’s wall now has drains that are centered to maximize their effectiveness. If water is behind the wall, I can’t stress how important it is to have these drains. When a wall is out of plumb it’s usually because the drains are not present.

We do not live in Philadelphia but have a wall that looks just like this and is in need of repair. We have spoken to several contractors who have told us they would need to tear down the wall and rebuild it. How do we find someone who will remove old pointing and repair the stone wall and not tear it all down and start over? Your work is beautiful!,
Fantastic work. I’m doing very, very minor tuck pointing on 80 year old limestone home in Ohio. There’s small pebble content in the mortar. I’m curious if you’d have a quick recommendation. Would I still use brown sand/mortar mix?
Great job....but why wouldn't you bother power washing and cleaning the stone at the end? The dirt covers up the beautiful gray, pink or earthy color of the stones. Also there is still green plant growth or mold. It can't be good to leave that on the wall. I suggest power washing once completely dry.

Appoligies newbie here but at my job pointing a wall means for an acual point inbetween the stones like triangular is there another name for that just looking for some good tips cause im terrible at it
Awful workmanship,new pointing will last a couple of years then the face will come off the stone,cement is the wrong product,stone is in good shape,so should have used 1 NHL 3.5 lime to 3 parts sharp sand. The damage that will happen to the stonework with cement will be that the rain water will get into the stone and with any frost will turn to ice and will find the softest part to escape from which will be the stone as cement is harder then the stone, lime has a breathability quality with no damage to the stone.
