How to Install a GFCI Outlet Like a Pro — by Home Repair Tutor

Learning how to install a GFCI outlet can save your life.

GFCI outlets are required by code in bathrooms, kitchens, and garages. But did you know you should Test and Reset them every 30 days?

Don’t worry if you didn’t know this.

The folks at Underwriters Laboratories have a new requirement that mandates all new GFCI outlets be self-testing as of the end of June 2015.

Fortunately Leviton has a new GFCI called the SmartLock Pro Self-Testing GFCI. It Tests and Resets itself every 15 minutes. The green LED light on the outlet indicates if the outlet is working correctly. If the light turns Red you know the GFCI isn’t working right and likely needs to be replaced.

I kidnapped my electrician Bill White (just kidding) and we made several video tutorials. One of them is this one. Bill shows you how to properly wire a new GFCI and explains step-by-step what to do.

How often do you get to see someone like Bill do his craft?

Check out my video to watch Bill in action and get some priceless electrical tips that will help you with other projects, not just GFCI installation

  • You didn't explain about the bare nutral,or wiring it up with the switch which is most common... you should complete this video and don't forget any steps especially when you say " step by step"..(your quotes words)

  • Kind of strange example of how you may be shocked ??? Or what you would be doing to be shocked on the morning??? That kid looked old enough to do her own hair man

  • ... Heat causes electrical malfunctions. Yes, and? In conclusion, heat from electrical malfunctions causes smoke, sparks and fire...

  • I would never install an outlet that could decide not to work. The user should have the control. It us OK to warn that the GFCI does not work but the decision should be up to the user. Calling an electrician to change it at minutes notice is expensive.

The argument that ground protects from falling objects makes no sense as most plugs do not have a ground pin. If you want to protect out real protectors in the outlet.
