How to Fill a Raised Bed and Save 60%+ on Soil Costs

Get the raised beds I use in my garden: https://shop.epicgardening.com/ Raised garden beds are my preferred way to grow in my urban garden, but filling them can cost a pretty penny. Now, there are MANY ways to fill a garden bed on the cheap, and this is just ONE of them. It makes use of existing organic matter on your property (sticks, logs, brush, grass clippings, unfinished compost, etc.) to fill the bottom half of your bed.

Then, fill the remainder with a high-quality mix that you can either buy or make yourself. This method is particularly useful when growing in TALL (18″+) beds, as you don’t need the perfect soil mix all of the way down. Over time, the fill material will break down and become food for bacteria, fungi, and other soil life and turn into high-quality soil for your garden over the years.

  • Can we add sprinklers and water drippers to these beds? If yes , how?

  • The only problem with putting logs, wood products in this bed ,if it is close to your home ,you are building a buffet for termites. If you use wood products make sure it is well away from any wooden structure, because termites when they finish off the logs , their next step is your home

  • Got 8 of my 9 Birdies beds delivered through you. Thanks for the video, I have lots of logs and Cedar mulch to fill them up with 60%. Getting close to having my garden completed.

  • Could someone tell me how you keep amending soil, adding compost, once your bed gets basically full of soil?

  • New follower here: I was watching a video by Martha Stewart and her gardener a while ago and they recommend using bubble wrap and weed barrier at the bottom of containers to 1) Help with drainage and 2) Make it easier to move containers around since bubble wrap is lighter than wood and rocks. What are your thoughts on that?

  • Thank you! Great information! I am in Missouri and most people need raised beds because it's so rocky.

  • Hi, so glad you sell Birdie's raised beds. I've been looking at them all weekend long (2/8/22 today) and have been ready to buy at the sale price. Even talked to Wendy about the configuration situation of the raised beds which I didn't understand from your website. This put me behind in ordering. Now, I haven't been able to get anyone to call me back yet, but someone named Kris told me by text that I can't get the sale price for the ones I wanted because there is about to be a severe shortage of these beds, but you'll give me 10% off the ones I want which still makes the price prohibitive for me. Will you please honor the sale price of the items that are in my cart right now so I can, as Kris said, keep growing? Thank you. BTW, love your vids!
