We partnered with American Standard on this video (they provided the bathroom accessories) because it was part of series of videos showing how to remodel a bathroom. Our website and YouTube channel have those tutorials in case you’re interested.

First things first, what drill bit should be used for ceramic or porcelain tile? Well, the best drill bit for bathroom tiles is Milwaukee’s Diamond Plus Mini Hole Saw.

This hole saw will drill holes in ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles, glass, and more. Plus it’s fairly inexpensive.

Plus this mini hole saw allow you to drill into tiles without breaking them. Hold the drill at a 45 degree angle to start the drilling process. Then slowly tilt the hole saw 90 degrees to the tile.

Drill into the tiles for 3 to 5 seconds then cool off the hole saw in water. This also cuts down on the dust. Be patient and you’ll drill a perfect hole in the tile.

Once the holes are created what is used to screw into the tile? Most bathroom accessories come with plastic inserts. Tap the inserts into the tile with a rubber mallet then attach the brackets to the tile using the provided screws. Just be careful not to over tighten the screws as this could crack the tile.

  • So are standard plastic drywall receivers ok to use, to drive the mounting screws into the tile?

  • Great video, thank you! How does this bit perform with glass tile?

  • Man first time i drilled into ceramic tiles it took me many hours to make 6 holes using these arrow drill bits!!

  • Hello Jeff, what brand is that pole used to set the laser level height?

  • You list an impact drill in the details write-up. I assume you do not use an impact drill for the drilling through tile and use a "regular" drill?

  • If this was being done in a shower or wet area, would you silicon the plugs prior to putting them in? Are these "special" wall anchors for use in tile and wet environments? I'm looking to put in a corner shelf and hooks for wash clothes. Thanks!!

  • Hey Jeff, Great info. Have a question.. I'm needing to mount hand holds and just so happens they fall right at the grout joint. Do I move it over and have a very small distance between the hole and grout line or just center the hole in the grout joint where it will be slightly wider than the joint. (1/8 joint... #8 wood screw into 2x4 behind the tiles) Thankx
