  • looks good but from an engineering point of view the cantelever design will fail sooner rather than later ...there is just not enough support, and with the weight of average person approaching 250 pounds two of those people will end up in an ambulance... i have build dozens of decks in my time!

  • I would caution anyone to replicate this design for their deck. I am a civil engineer, and I don't comment much, but I see this deck being unsafe. Also, the drop off the sides are probably right around 30 inches, so a building permit should have been acquired. I can't imagine a building inspector would let that be built.

And for anyone that's not a super nerd like me, just imagine the biggest person you know flopping down and back on the edge of this bench. The nails surely would have come at least a little loose the first time.

Since this is almost 2 years old, I'd love to see whether it's still standing tbh.

  • The bench is still holding on! I did add additional support to the original framing of the deck before filming. In the written tutorial I do stipulate that the design was not engineered, and should not be used for applications higher than mine without doing so. I appreciate the feedback, and would love to hear your ideas on how to increase the structural stability.

  • What an utterly ridiculous waste of time and money ! Would have been 10x quicker and cheaper to simple extend the deck !

  • Wonder if this would work better if you but the 4x4 inside the rim board and attach it with bolts and washers or even bring the seat in so its not 100% counter-levered. I think you would only have to change your design a small amount by cutting the angles closer to 30/60 so you are sitting directly over top your 4x4s and not 20 7/8" behind it.

  • Just built mine this past week for a weekend party...they look great and makes our deck more spacious! Thank you!

  • Uhh...why didn't you stain all the wood before assembling? All in all-not bad for a novice as I would have noched the 4x4s as opposed to installing metal fasteners that will rust over time...
