Ep 1: Introduction for a High End Kitchen Remodel / Making your own cabinets – DIY Kitchen Cabinets

What’s up woodworkers! This video series shows how to build high end kitchen cabinets by the average woodworker. The cabinets were first custom designed in a free 3D CAD program (SketchUp) with a flair to the arts and crafts style. I decided to take on the more difficult style of inset cabinets, and I will go through all the challenges that this presents in some of the upcoming videos. This first episode provides an overview of the cabinets. I’ve been building them in three parts, and in this video I’m highlighting one section of the cabinets that is already completed and installed.

In the upcoming episodes, I’ll present information in a tutorial like format as I build the second set of cabinets: a kitchen island. I’m hoping that the average DIY person can learn a lot of techniques, skills and tricks for building their own cabinets at home. Basic construction techniques are used: table saw for most cuts, some tongue and groove work with a router table, biscuit joints for holding together the doors and drawers, and some pocket hole screws for the face frame construction.

The cabinet doors and drawers are inset, as opposed to a full or partial overlay. The cabinets are constructed out of alder wood, utilizing solid alder for the face frames, and alder plywood for the carcass (body). The drawers are solid hard maple for durability. Everything is finished with an environmentally friendly water based finish that I spray with an HVLP. I top the cabinets off with a durable custom made DIY concrete countertop.
