In this video, I will show you how I built my network closet in my home. Prior to doing this install, my router, cable modem, switches were just placed on my desk in the office. Over the years, I made changes to the connection and added more network devices. My office was a mess.

By organizing all the network components in the closet, I was able to organize all the components and clean up all the cables. Now your network needs will most likely differ than what I have, but this video will give you a good idea on how to approach this project if you choose to. I have included links above for some of the parts used.

Also check out the videos below on how to make your own Ethernet cable.

* What is the purpose of having a patch panel?
Many people in the comment section asked this question. I actually explain this in the video (14:19). A patch panel is not something you have to install BUT if you have many rooms or devices in your home or office, a patch panel can help you easily add/remove/modify network connection to devices or rooms. It gives you the flexibility to make changes in an organized manner instead of throwing cables over one another which can become a big mess of wires.

Let me give you an example, if you have 20 devices from different parts of a home/office going to a switch in the network room. A year later, 7 of those devices are no longer used, and you want to free up those switch ports for something else. If you did not install a patch panel, you will disconnect those 7 cables from the switch and it will just sit there. Then you might run new wires for new devices and have more cables going to the switch. This is how a network room can turn into a rats nest. By having a patch panel, you can simply disconnect the patch cable and move it to a new switch port or make a new run to the device.

Patch panels are often used in commercial applications by most large companies. Companies are very critical of several things: 1) organization, 2) ease of troubleshooting, 3) future proofing their design, 4) neatness – often they will showcase their network center to upper management and clients

Again you don’t have to have one, but if you have many network devices, and want to have an organized network area for many years, it’s something you can consider.

  • saw this video last year got me motivated and I got mine done - just wanted to thank you for posting this

  • At 9:30, you said you were going to use the T568A color coding, but then you proceeded to call out the colors for T568B.
Also, in either configuration (A) or (B), the Solid Brown wire is ALWAYS at the end, but at 10:35, you put White/Brown as the last wire.

  • Excellent work. You're a very patient man haha. I for one find the use of a patch panel in a home setting absolutely useless.

  • What about the wireless network, did you disabled the WLAN from the router? How many access-points to you have?

  • Outstanding! Beautiful setup. Very very clear and concise information!

  • Nice job! But why would you put the monitor in the closet?
