9 Beginner Raised Bed Garden Mistakes to Avoid

Order Birdies raised beds: https://shop.epicgardening.com Raised garden beds are the #1 method I currently use to grow a ton of healthy, epic produce in my garden. But I made A TON of mistakes when I started my raised bed garden, so I figured I’d share them with you so you can hopefully learn from my mistakes instead of making them yourself.

A few good soil mixes:
– 1/3 perlite, 1/3 coco coir, 1/3 compost
– 1/2 topsoil, 1/4 compost, 1/4 grass clippings, straw, leaves, etc.

  • Kevin, do we need to line the bottom or our raise bed? Or just around it to prevent weeds?
    Thank you

  • Ok my friend. I'm in Julian so my gardening is harder up here but I loved your tips. Especially the ninja movements. I'm a little older and planting to make it easier to work on is important. I think climate change is hitting the mountains more than the beach areas of San Diego. I'm seriously going to try some tropicals up here by mid to late march. Happy gardening.

  • One thought that crossed my mind about distance between beds is a lawnmowers width so weeds or grass can still be tamed.

  • I live in MN and my biggest issue is with my tropical edibles. I have citrus trees and curry leaf trees, both of which I need to keep outside in the summer so they get enough sun. But through the winter, indoors, they get in worse and worse shape as time passes, partly due to less light (even though they’re in front of south facing windows, and have grow lights in the darker spots). But mainly due to pests that they bring back in with them. Particularly spider mites and scale. I’ve tried neem oil, and organic sprays. But neither have worked. I tried adding predators, but indoors they ignored my plants and just kept crawling on the windows. Since I eat the leaves of the curry leaf plants and the kaffir lime trees, I don’t want to spray with anything harsh or toxic. They are so delicious and not available locally, I really need to find a good solution to this problem.

  • Hi, thanks for an informative video. I am a beginner. You said 'amend (the soil) a little more before you plan in' after the Winter. Could you explain further detail how to 'amend'?
